Yesterday I finally received this month’s Birchbox in the mail. This has probably been one of the longest I’ve waited for my delivery. Usually my box arrives by the 14th or so. This month I was sitting on pins and needles.
The theme of this month’s box was “Finishing School.” No, not like “I’m finishing school” but like the posh etiquette schools for young ladies. This box tried to highlight products that would finish off your look. Well, not sure how much the products I received really fit this theme but judge for yourself. Here is what was in my August box:
This box was curated in collaboration with Ann Taylor. It included coupons for the Ann Taylor stores and a style guide to finish off three different looks. The products themselves were a little bit of a let down. After July’s great box I just wasn’t overly excited about most of what I received (with the exception of the WEI Pomegranate buffing beads). At a total value of $18.75 it also wasn’t as great as last months’ box. Here is the breakdown of the individual products:
- ModelCo Party Proof Lipstick
Shade: Red Velvet
Sample size: 1 lipstick, $8
Full Size: set of 3 lipsticks, $24
“The concentrated, vitamin-rich formula heals dryness while coating lips in long-lasting color.”
I’ve been really getting into lipsticks lately. But for some reason the only colors I ever receive in my Birchboxes are red and bright pink and this time was no different. Sigh. I have blonde hair and very fair skin so it’s really hard for me to pull off those colors. In my opinion brighter colors always look better on someone with darker complexion and hair. I feel more comfortable with colors that are closer to my natural lip color, light baby pinks and purples. I received one of the colors in the Classic Collection called Red Velvet, a “snappy red with hits of pink.” Even though I’m not convinced that this color will work for me it sounds like this lipstick is really close to a lip balm stain which I really like.
- Juice Beauty Oil-free Moisturizer
Sample Size: 0.5oz, $7 value
Full size: 2oz, $28
“Instead of plain old H2O, this moisturizer is formulated with a blend of juices and other botanicals that nourish skin. Organic apple, grape, and pomegranate juices nourish with antioxidants and phytonutrients, while hyaluronic acid draws moisture to the skin without the weight of oils. Aloe leaf juice and cucumber extract soothe skin and heal redness and irritation. Use it regularly to balance your skin tone while replenishing moisture levels.”
I’ve been loyal to Clinique’s Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relieve for the past 5 years or so. It has been the only moisturizer that I’ve tried that provides a ton of hydration while being non-greasy and sinking into my skin immediately. The only downside in my opinion is that it doesn’t contain an SPF. I’m intrigued by the ingredients of this Juice Beauty moisturizer and how it’s based on fruit juices. I’m curious what effect that has on the consistency, how fast it absorbs, and how well it hydrates. Also, it’s organic so that’s a plus. However, this moisturizer also doesn’t contain an SPF so I’m not sure that I would switch to it since Clinique’s Moisture Surge is working so well for me. Although, the Juice Beauty Oil-free Moisturizer is quite a bit cheaper so that’s a consideration as well.
- uniqONE All In One Hair Treatment
Sample size: 9ml, $1.08 value
Full size: 150ml, $17.99
“This leave-in treatment is designed to address your top hair concerns in one product. Not only does it eliminate the need for other styling aids (like leave-in conditioners and defrizzing agents), but it works well for curly or pin-straight locks. Even better, the lightweight formula shields strands from color-fading UVA and UVB rays.”
As I explained back then I struggle with split ends so I’m a huge fan of leave in conditioning treatments. I’m excited to try this out and compare it to some of the other treatments I’ve received as various samples. I do have to say that I’m a little disappointed to receive two such similar products in two subsequent Birchboxes but that’s just one of the minor downsides of this type of subscription service.
- WEI Pomegranate Buffing Beads
Sample size: 2 packets, $2 value
Full size: 20 packets, $20
I really like the idea behind this product. You mix one packet with a quarter-sized amount of your regular cleanser and it instantly becomes an exfoliating scrub. The buffing beads are made from milled pomegranate seeds which contains a lot of antioxidants. I’m exited to try this product — I just need to figure out what cleanser to mix it with.
- LA FRESH® Eco-Beauty Oil-Free Face Cleanser, fragrance-free
Sample size: 2 wipes, $0.67 value
Full Size: 30 wipes, $9.99
I already received two wipes of the scented version of this product in the Limited Edition Birchbox for CEW – Prestige Headliners. I kinda felt “meh” about this product because they only did an okay job removing my makeup. However, I like that these samples are individually wrapped so these will be great for travel.
