I think I’ve been noticing a trend with Birchbox: the later my box ships the more I like its contents. This one was another awesome box and I’m excited about every single item in it.

This month Birchbox teamed up with Women’s Health to bring us beauty products to “power up” our routines. The Birchbox themes always seem a bit random, but okay. This is the second time since I’ve been with Birchbox that they collaborated with Women’s Health and like last year this box also included an offer for a free one-year subscription to Women’s Health magazine. Last year I decided to subscribe but I’m not sure that I liked the magazine enough to get it for another year. I’m just not that much into working out. The offer also gives you the option to receive a $9.99 refund which will almost cover the cost of this box so I might just do that.

Birchbox - July 2014 - Ruffian

RUFFIAN Nail Lacquer

Shade: Ambrosia
Full Size: 0.17 fl oz, $11

This month Birchbox offered their subscribers the option to pick one of the samples in their box. You could either choose  one of three Ruffian nail polishes from the Rapture collection or one of two Cynthia Rowley lip stain colors. I opted for the Ruffian nail lacquer in the shade Ambrosia which is a gorgeous metallic, shimmery lavender.

RUFFIAN Dressing Room Nail Lacquer Remover Towelettes

Full Size: 10 ct, $12
Sample Size: 1 ct, $1.20 value

Nail polish remover wipes are always a welcome sample for me. I like to stash them in my travel case, purse, or at work in case I my polish chips while on the go and I want to remove it to look presentable.

Birchbox - July 2014 - Naobay Body Radiance Lotion

Naobay Body Radiance Lotion

Full Size: 8.4 fl oz, $24
Sample Size: 1 fl oz, $2.86 value

“Olive oil, shea butter, and avocado oil deliver serious moisture, while aloe vera soothes and protects skin. More than 98 percent of ingredients in this creamy lotion are natural, and over 19 percent are organic”

This lotion smells just like lemon drops and it has a very light consistency which makes it absorb really well. Normally I don’t go crazy over body lotion samples but this one I love.

Birchbox - July 2014 - Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel

Full Size: 1.7 fl oz, $48
Sample Size:0.17 fl oz, $4.80 value

“Suitable for all skin types, this pH-neutral protein peel gently exfoliates delicate skin without the use of harsh acids or abrasives. The unique gel binds to dead skin cells on the face, neck, and décolleté, forming solids that can be easily washed away with water.”

I tried this chemical peel on the back of my hand and all of that dead, dry skin came right off. It was a bit gross, but kinda amazing, to see all of that gunk peeling off but my hand felt a lot smoother afterward.

Birchbox - July 2014 - Benefit Posiebalm

Benefit Posiebalm

Full Size: 0.1 oz, $18
Sample Size: 0.01 oz, $1.80 value

This lip balm looks like a bubblegum pink in the tube but it goes on very sheer to the point where it almost doesn’t have any tint to it at all. Most people would probably be disappointed by that but I personally am okay with it. The sample is really tiny though. The little bit that is sticking out of the tube in the picture is all there is to it. Maybe I’ll be able to finish it off during the Sample Killah challenge.

Birchbox - July 2014 - Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Hair Mask

Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Hair Mask

Full Size: 4 oz, $25.95
Sample Size: 2 x 0.5 oz, $6.49 value

“The formula is loaded with antioxidants to neutralize damaging free radicals. Argan oil, honey, amber, and crushed pearls (if the mask’s creamy texture wasn’t proof enough of its luxuriousness) revive strands and preserve their youthful texture and shine. What’s more, the mask works with all hair types, and is cruelty-free.”

Hair masks are one of my vices. This one smells like marshmallows and the description sounds great so I’m really excited to give it a try.

This might be my favorite Birchbox to date. I love every single thing I received and I will use all of it. The total value of this box was almost $30 which is pretty great for Birchbox standards. Keep up the good work, Birchbox!

RUFFIAN – Hedge Fund

I received this Ruffian nail polish in my September Birchbox and I figured it was about time to give it a try and show you guys the result.

This color, Hedge Fund, is not something I would usually gravitate toward. It’s a moss green with microscopic golden glitter suspended in it which gives it a metallic finish. It’s a great fall color.

Ruffian - Hedge Fund

Surprisingly, I ended up liking the color a lot more than I thought I would. The bit of sparkle that the gold gives to this polish makes it really special. The moss green color matches a few shirts that I own but I found that it clashes horribly with most of my other clothes.

The application of this nail polish was very easy. The bottle and, hence, the brush are shorter than other nail polishes which allows for more control during application. I was able to apply this polish without any brush marks which oftentimes can be a problem with metallic nail polishes. The coverage is awesome, reaching near opacity with one coat. I used two coats to make sure that my tips wouldn’t show through.

The wear time is great. I didn’t have any problems with chipping. My only complaint is that this nail polish is a bit of a pain to take off. The gold glitter is very resistant to removal.

At $10 for 0.17 oz this nail polish contains only about 1/3 of the product compared to, for example, OPI nail polishes. However, I think that the quality of this nail polish justifies the price. I would definitely consider purchasing other Ruffian nail polishes in the future.

Birchbox – September 2013

To find out more about what Birchbox is click here.

I received this box about a week ago but since I went on a road trip I haven’t been able to review it yet. So without further ado, here is my September Birchbox.

Birchbox - September 2013 - box

This box marks the three year anniversary of Birchbox as a company. It’s pretty cool that they’ve been around this long. The theme is “Heritage” and the enclosed card talks about the brands Birchbox works with and how each of them has their own unique history. Highlighted is the brand Ruffian, which is this month’s collaborator. Every box this month contains one of their nail polishes.

Birchbox - September 2013 - content

1. amika Blow Up Spray

Sample size: 2 fl oz, $6 value
Full size: 8 fl oz, $24

“The lightweight spray performs a variety of functions, protecting, nourishing, smoothing, and volumizing hair. We apply it to damp strands before blow-drying to provide heat protection, texture, and lift.”

I’m a huge fan of products that promise more volume although I have to admit that I’m usually too lazy to deal with applying them. In addition, most of them just don’t seem to do much.

The amika Blow Up Spray (or Bombshell Blowout Spray as it’s called on the sample) promises to be volumizing in addition to being nourishing and protecting from heat damage. Sounds like a one-stop-shop which is great when you don’t feel like applying a ton of different products (like me).

As I’ve mentioned a few times before, I really like amika products so I’m very excited to give this product a try. The sample size is generous so I should get a lot of use out of it.

2. Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips

Sample size: 2 x 3 ml, $5.80 value
Full size: 15 ml, $14.50

“Originally created for new mothers facing sore nipples from breastfeeding, Dr. Lipp’s ultra hydrating, healing formula later gained a rep as the ultimate lip gloss, primer and multipurpose balm among savvy London makeup artists.”

When I saw this product in my Birchbox I gave it a try straight away but, unfortunately, I was not impressed. This lip balm has the consistency of Vaseline. It reminds me a lot of Carmex in that respect. For me personally it’s just too greasy and heavy. I actually have the feeling that lip balms like these do the opposite of what they promise. I always wake up the next day with my lips way more dry and chapped than the day before.

However, I like the size of this sample. It’s a very small tube so it’s perfect for traveling. For some reason I ended up with two tubes in my Birchbox but I won’t complain. If anyone really loves this product let me know and we can do a switch of the one I got extra.

3. Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45+

Sample Size: 0.17 fl oz, $4.42 value
Full size: 1.5 fl oz, $39

“A moisturizer, sunscreen, and treatment serum all-in-one, this tinted BB cream even helps hide imperfections—so there’s no need for foundation or cover-up.”

I received Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Beauty Balm SPF 25+ in another Birchbox about a year ago and thought it was pretty good. I like that this one has a higher SPF and promises good coverage. The sample size is large enough that I will be able to get a few uses out of it.

4. Eyeko Black Magic Mascara

Sample size: 0.13 fl oz, $10.76 value
Full Size: 0.29 fl oz, $24

“Designed for after-hours seduction to create drama, volume and curl to visibly transform and intensify your lashes. Using a unique parables-free formula blending Keratin and Shea Butter with a water-resistant carbon black finish.”

At the moment I swear by Too Faced’s Size Queen mascara so I’m not really in the market for a different one. However, I like that this mascara is water-proof. I just wish that I received it a few months earlier when I was still visiting the pool regularly. I think the packaging is really cute and unique. This is another one of those samples that will be just perfect for traveling.

5. RUFFIAN Nail Lacquer

Shade: Hedge Fund
Full Size: 0.17 fl oz, $10

When it comes to nail polishes I like to stick with classic shades – neutrals, reds, purples. If I feel sassy I may go for a metallic. So this shade, Hedge Fund – a metallic green, is not something that I would usually go for. But trying something new is what subscription boxes are all about. I think this shade is great for the fall so I will give it a shot once the weather gets cooler.

The value of this box came in at just over $35 which is crazy good. Although I don’t care that much about the nail polish color or the lip balm I’m very happy with the amika Blow Up Spray and the Eyeko Black Magic Mascara. All in all I think that this was a really good box.
