Glossybox – July 2014

Glossybox - July 2014 - contents

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I came home today and found my July Glossybox on the doorstep. Normally Glossybox is notorious for shipping extra late in the month. So late in fact that it hasn’t been uncommon for customers to get their boxes the subsequent month. However, Glossybox recently changed warehouses and shipping has been pretty fast since. This, however, is still the quickest that I’ve ever gotten my Glossybox and I wouldn’t be surprised if was one of the first ones to receive theirs. Lucky me!

You might remember that I originally only signed up for a three-month subscription when My Subscription Addiction had a great offer code. I was a bit on the fence about renewing but when I saw the spoilers for this month’s box, I was sold. Plus, I was able to use another great offer code to get 20% off my three-month subscription. Normally a three-month subscriptions would cost you $60 but with the 20% off I’m now only paying $16 a box which is much more reasonable than the per-month fee of $21.

The spoilers for July’s box didn’t disappoint. The brand focus this month is mostly on skin care which might be a miss with a lot of folks that prefer makeup but I personally don’t mind in the least.

Here’s what came in my July Glossybox.

Philip B pH Restorative Detangling Toning Mist

Full Size: 4.23 fl oz, $24
Sample Size: 2 fl oz, $11.35 value

Glossybox - July 2014 - Philip B pH Restorative Detangling Toning Mist

I had previously received a Philip B conditioner in my Bergdorf Goodman Glossybox from May so I’m familiar with the brand but hadn’t heard of their Toning Mist before. I know a lot of people swear by apple cider vinegar to use on their hair instead of conditioner. This leave-in treatment contains apple cider vinegar (and smells like it) as well as various essential oils to detangle, smooth, and add shine to your hair. Some people might find the scent a bit off-putting but I don’t mind too much. I’m gonna give it a try and see how well it works.

(MALIN + GOETZ) Mojito Lip Balm

Full Size: 0.35 oz, $12
Sample Size: 0.2 oz, $6.86 value

Glossybox - July 2014 - (Malin + Goetz) Mojito Lip Balm

You guys will be pleased to hear that this lip balm does indeed smell like mojitos. It’s such a refreshing and uplifting scent that takes me straight to the beach. There’s a bit of tingling sensation after application but not so much that it would be bothersome. Aside from that it does just what a lip balm is supposed to do.

GLAMGLOW Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment

Full Size: 1.7 fl oz, $69
Sample Size: 0.5 fl oz, $20.29 value

Glossybox - July 2014 - Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment

When I first saw Glamglow on the list of companies for this month’s box I was really hoping for the Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment. Anything really but the Youthmud. Alas that’s exactly what would be in this box, of course. I had previously received a sample of this mask from Sephora and I didn’t really like it. I know that this is a holy grail beauty product for many so I plan on giving it another shot and finally use up my old sample during this month’s Sample Killah challenge. Depending on how that goes I might keep this sample or put it up for trade.

Skin Inc Custom-Blend Brightening Serum

Size: 0.34 fl oz, $45

Glossybox - July 2014 - Skin Inc Custom-Blend Brightening Serum

Of all the spoilers released for the July Glossybox I was most excited for this skin serum. I think that this is the same blend that was sent out in the Mother’s Day boxes a few months ago. It contains vitamin A to improve skin tone, chlorella (an algae) to detoxify, and hyaluronic acid to hydrate. I’ve been wanting to try a skin serum with hyaluronic acid for some time so I’m really excited about this product.

Mitchell and Peach Body Cream

Full Size: 6.08 fl oz, $61
Sample Size: 1.4 fl oz, $14.05 value

Glossybox - July 2014 - Mitchel and Peach Body Cream

This body cream smells lovely. It’s a floral scent  with notes of ylang-ylang, palmarosa, rose, English lavender and violet. Floral scents can easily turn grandma but this one is light and fresh and not overpowering. The consistency of this body cream is really light as well and it absorbs nicely. I tried it on the back of my hand and it left my skin super soft. Also, I can’t stop sniffing my hand.

One thing I like about Glossybox is that they consistently deliver high-end, high-value beauty products. This box was no different.  The total value of this month’s box was close to $100 which is pretty spectacular for the $16 that I paid for it. Best of all, I will use almost everything in it with the possible exception of the Glamglow face mask.

Now excuse me while I go and slather my body in the Mitchell and Peach Body Cream.

GLAMGLOW – Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment

A few months back I was really unhappy with the state of my skin and decided to take charge of my skin care routine. Since then I discovered face masks as a great addition to my beauty rituals. I like to use face mask when I’m in the mood for a bit of pampering. Combined with a good book and a hot cup of tea they make for a very relaxing experience.

At $69 for 1.7 oz the Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment falls in the high-end range of face masks. Considering the hefty price tag I was excited to see a deluxe sample available as a bonus point perk for Sephora Beauty Insiders and added it to my last Sephora order.

“This mud mask leaves skin noticeably radiant and glowing. It works with the body’s natural moisturizing collagen to provide gentle resurfacing exfoliation and helps to leave skin smoother, brighter, and softer. While providing tighter skin texture and tighter pores, it provides a more youthful appearance and absorbs impurities without removing natural oils.”

GlamGlow - Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment

This past week I was finally able to try it out.

This mud mask is formulated with green tea leaf extract which gives it a nice green tea smell. It actually contains real pieces of tea leaves which at first really threw me off. I thought that there was something wrong with the sample I received because it looked more like some pieces of plastic got into the product. Once I read up on it and figured out what it was it made sense. This seems to be one of those products that start with a great idea but are lacking in execution. Most of the tea leaf pieces are HUGE but they are few and far between. This makes me think that they don’t really do anything as they aren’t distributed evenly all over your skin. I would find the claims about it much more believable if the pieces were a lot smaller and evenly mixed into the mask. As it stand I think it’s more of a fun (or weird?) marketing gimmick.

Once I got over the green tea leaves, I applied the mask to my face. I didn’t really need to apply a very thick layer. However, the green tea leaves took up a lot of volume of the product which resulted in me probably using more than I thought I did.

The instructions say to leave the mask on for 10 minutes. During this time period I felt a cooling sensation. In addition my skin started to tingle as one can expect going by the name of the product. This wasn’t too unpleasant but a little painful around my nose area. Fortunately, that sensation went away after a few minutes and was replaced by a tightening feeling as the mud mask was drying.

GlamGlow - Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment - Application

After the 10 minutes I followed the instructions and removed the mask by adding water and applying a circular motion to my skin to exfoliate. The mask contains tiny pumice pieces to aid with that. The pumice crystals weren’t too rough on my skin but I could see how it might be too harsh for people with sensitive skin.

The results of this mask were ok. My skin felt soft but firm and I could tell that it helped with some of the blackheads on my nose. However, the results weren’t earth-shattering. I couldn’t tell a difference in the size of my pores on my cheeks (my problem area). Instead I developed some more blemishes over the next few days. Now, I’ve been experimenting with a few different makeup products so I don’t want to blame my skin’s reaction on this mask. On the other hand, I didn’t think that this mask really helped to fight my blemishes either. At this price tag I was expecting more but the overall result was just “Meh.” Nothing I couldn’t achieve with a cheaper product. I will be using up the rest of the mask but I don’t think that I will repurchase.

Have you tried the Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment? What did you think of it?

Beauty Hauls: Sephora Online Order and BeautyBrands Purchases

I decided to place on order with Sephora after I read DebE’s Gotta Haves #4 post and found that the Benefit Rockateur blush looked just too gorgeous to pass up. I also wanted to get some of the other items from my September Beauty Wish List so I added the Philosophy Raspberry Shower Gel to my cart. $5.50 away from free shipping also made me the proud owner of three new nail polishes (they were 3 for $10 after all). Is it bad that I’m almost more excited to try out those than the blush that was the original reason for the order?

I also used up some of my points, got a free gift with purchase, and some free samples – a lot of freebies for just one order…

A few days ago the package finally arrived. Here are the contents of my order:

The same day I also visited my local BeautyBrands to exchange my Smashbox Photo Finish More Than Primer – Blemish Control for the Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Primer. I was also hoping to pick up OPI – I Knead Sour-Dough from the San Francisco Collection. Seeing that polish in person though, it was darker than I expected from pictures I’ve seen and slightly too brown for my taste. I decided to go with another OPI polish, Chicago Champage Toast, which looked like a very pretty rose metallic.

I also had some coupons for free items (I love BeautyBrands coupons – they’re seriously the best). In addition, I was able to snatch up a few samples. I was most excited to see that they had little samples of the Murad Essential-C Day Moisture. I’ve really been liking the Essential-C Night Moisture I got in my last Murad order so I’ve been curious to try more of the products in the Environmental Shield line.
