L’Occitane La Collection De Grasse has been on the top of my fragrance wish list for a very long time. I first discovered this brand when I received a sample of the Jasmin & Bergamote scent in the Birchbox Home: From the Garden and absolutely loved it. Ever since I’ve been obsessed with all the scents in the collection. Whenever I pass up their store I have to go in and apply one of them.
“Inspired by and named after the world perfume capital in the south of France, La Collection de Grasse includes stunning fragrances that combine precious ingredients from lands near and far: Jasmine & Bergamote, Magnolia & Mure, Vanille & Narcisse and Thé Vert & Bigarade. Each eau de toilette of the Collection is made with natural extracts, which yield the purest and clearest notes.”
In addition to the Eau de Toilette the four scents are also sold as soap, body milk, and shower gel.
Unfortunately, at $75 a piece the full size Eau de Toilette is out of my price range – especially since I like all four scents. After some googling I found that there was a miniature gift set that was sold earlier this spring but by then it had unfortunately been sold out. Now, I’m a big fan of eBay when it comes to purchasing specific samples or limited edition items. There have been a few listings for this set over the past months – some cheaper, some more expensive. At the end of last month I finally decided to take the plunge and buy it.
The set comes in a cute cardboard case with a beautiful print. Not sure what I would do with it but it’s just too pretty to throw out.
When I opened up the case I saw that the seller had included a few samples with it. That was really nice and unexpected. The three samples are:
- Immortelle Brightening UV Shield SPF40
“Anti-aging protective treatment for an even, more luminous complexion.”
Sample size: 1 ml / 0.03 fl oz, $1.74 value
Full size: 30 ml / 1 fl oz, $58
- Shea Butter Fabulous Serum
“Visibly repairs and helps to protect skin against harsh conditions.”
Sample size: 1 ml / 0.03 fl oz, $1.26 value
Full size: 30 ml / 1 fl oz, $42
- A foil sample of the Jasmin & Bergamote scent of the collection (0.3 ml / 0.01 fl oz, $0.30 value).
Each miniature is individually wrapped in a cardboard box with the signature color of the scent: yellow for Jasmin & Bergamote, purple for Magnolia & Mûre, orange for Vanille & Narcisse, and green for The Vért & Bigarade. The perfume liquids are colored in the same manner because otherwise the bottles are indistinguishable. The names are not featured on the bottles which are only adorned with the signature ampersand of the collection.
The box contains a cardboard insert which fits the individual perfume boxes side by side. It’s very simple, elegant, and tasteful. Unfortunately mine arrived a bit ripped and dented but that’s the risk when ordering something online.
Each miniature contains 7.5 ml / 0.25 fl oz. The bottles don’t come with a spray nozzle which is kind of a bummer. Instead the top unscrews and you have to use your finger to apply the perfume.
What I love about this set is the variety of choices. There is one for every mood, occasion, and season. Here are my impressions of the four scents:
Jasmin & Bergamote
A sensual and luminous union between jasmine from Grasse and bergamot from Italy.
Top notes: mandarin orange, bergamot
Heart notes: jasmine, lemon leaves
Base notes: sandalwood, cedar
This scent has a light floral note. It’s not as sweet as Magnolia & Mûre. Instead it leans more to the earthy side.
Magnolia & Mûre
A mysterious and charming union between magnolia from the Far East and blackberry from the South of France.
Top notes: bergamot, blackberry
Heart notes: magnolia, rose
Base notes: patchouli, moss
This is probably the most floral of the four perfumes. You can definitely smell the magnolia and just a slight hint of the blackberry which is a combination I love.
Vanille & Narcisse
A radiant and voluptuous embrace between vanilla from Madagascar and narcissus from France.
Top notes: blackcurrant, bergamot
Heart notes: narcissus, gardenia
Base notes: vanilla, tonka bean
I find this to be a warm and slightly heavier perfume – great for the colder months. The vanilla definitely comes through but the narcissus adds something else just a little floral.
The Vért & Bigarade
A refreshing union between the aromatic green tea and the zesty bitter orange.
Top notes: orange, bitter orange
Heart notes: green tea, yerba mate
Base notes: cedar, thyme, musk
This is definitely the freshest scent in the collection. It’s a light citrus note that makes it great for spring time. It’s market as unisex although I still find it to be fairly feminine.
Have you tried the La Collection de Grasse scents? Which one is your favorite?
